Rose
Set in 17th-century Germany during the Thirty Years’ War, Markus Schleinzer’s Rose follows a mysterious soldier who arrives in an isolated Protestant village claiming an abandoned farmstead as his inheritance. Behind the scarred face and male identity is Rose, a woman determined to escape the limitations of her past and establish an independent life.
As she earns the community’s respect through hard work, courage and ingenuity, her carefully constructed identity becomes increasingly difficult to separate from the person she has chosen to become.
Schleinzer’s black-and-white images create a world at once stark and strangely beautiful. The eyes and face of the reliably excellent Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall, Project Hail Mary) are so expressive that they convey all the colour one might crave, like inner beauty. For her remarkable, intensely physical and moving performance, Hüller was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at the 2026 Berlinale.

The screening on Saturday 21 will be accompanied by Subtitles for Deaf and Hard of Hearing audiences.
