Camouflage
Ukraine, 2021. 22-year-old Vitaly dreams of starting a new life abroad. In Munich, he joins a student theatre group where, for the first time, he feels free to be himself. Then Russia invades Ukraine in February 2022.
Russia’s full-scale invasion foreces his mother and sister to flee Ukraine. They seek refuge with him in Munich, confronting Vitaly's new identity and bringing the feelings that the distance from the war cannot silence.
In his striking feature debut, Ukrainian-born filmmaker Mykyta Gibalenko explores displacement, identity and belonging through the experience of a young man caught between two worlds. Vitaly’s instinct is to adapt to each new environment, making Camouflage a bitter-sweet tale of migration that takes on unexpected scope and meaning.
An intelligent and affecting story shaped by the extraordinary reality of a generation whose lives were irrevocably changed by war.
This film is eligible for the Spirit of the Festival Award for Best Film award and Best Screenplay.
