Congo Boy
In Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, 17-year-old Robert dreams of becoming a musician. A Congolese refugee living with his four younger siblings, he is already carrying responsibilities far beyond his years. But music gives Robert another way of seeing the world.
He writes his own songs, raps about his experiences and performs in the nightclubs of Bangui, where his energy and talent draw enthusiastic crowds. His music becomes both an escape from the pressures of everyday life and a way of giving voice to the realities he cannot otherwise express. Drawing on his own experiences as a Congolese refugee and musician, director Rafiki Fariala creates a deeply personal coming-of-age story in which music, family and friendship provide moments of joy amid hardship.
With its vibrant performances, gentle humour and naturalistic young cast, Congo Boy never allows its difficult circumstances to overwhelm its sense of possibility. Robert's determination, his affection for his siblings and his belief in his own music give the film an infectious warmth. The result is a moving and uplifting portrait of a young artist trying to make space for a dream regardless of circumstances.
