Nowhere to Lay my Eyes (Nunduldega Eomne)
After ten years apart, Sang-hee (Kim Min-hee) travels with her brother to Jeju Island to visit their mother and stepfather. Over a few days, old tensions and new connections emerge.
With his signature humour and unfolding profundity, Hong Sang-soo finds the extraordinary in the apparently ordinary, observing the small shifts, awkward moments and sudden realisations that make up human relationships. At the centre of the film is Kim Min-hee, whose remarkable performance is almost entirely a matter of nuance: the intention of a laughter, the withholding of a word or movement can suggest an entire inner life. Her subtle, finely calibrated portrayal won her the Best Performance award at the 2026 Locarno Film Festival, where Hong also received the Best Director award.
Hong’s deceptively simple images and conversational rhythms allow meaning to accumulate almost imperceptibly, while Jeju’s changeable weather and the film’s dry, gently absurd humour provide a wonderfully unpredictable counterpoint. Familiar Hong Sang-soo territory - artists, chance encounters, food, drink, conversations that wander from the mundane towards the profound - becomes something freshly intimate and moving.
