You Don't Belong Here (Nu e locul tau aici)
Marius is the chief medical officer at a hospital in his small hometown, raising his teenage son, Ioan, alone after the death of his wife. His world is turned upside down when he learns that the police suspect Ioan of murder.
Marius has strong views on today's youth: their ignorance, their passivity, their apparent lack of agency. He has little faith in his son's generation. Yet it is with an old friend, a contemporary of his own, that he discusses the issues weighing on his mind — not with Ioan himself. Shy and withdrawn, Ioan struggles to open up to his imposing father. His ever-present computer seems to hold more of his secrets than the people closest to him.
This compelling moral fable from Romania won the Golden Leopard, the top prize at the Locarno Film Festival. Its themes may recall the acclaimed series Adolescence, but the film offers a very different and deeply rewarding experience. As You Don't Belong Here unfolds, a troubling question takes shape: in a world where screens are increasingly blamed for society's ills, are we willing to look at ourselves — as parents, and as adults — and ask what we might be getting wrong?
